Overview
FORGE is a personal development and journaling application for iOS, developed by Joe Hilton. This policy explains what data FORGE collects, where it goes, who processes it, and what control you have over it.
FORGE is built around private writing. Your journal content is never sold, never used for advertising, and never used to train AI models. It is processed only to deliver the features described below.
By using FORGE you agree to the collection and use of information as set out in this policy.
What FORGE collects
Account data
Passwords are handled entirely by Supabase Auth and are never stored in plain text or visible to the developer.
Journal and check-in data
Everything you write or record in the app is stored against your account:
Daily check-in. Mood and emotion selections, energy level, stress level, water intake, habit completions, today's win, tomorrow's priority, and your written reflection.
Written reflections. Free-text entries from the daily check-in and the reflection reply field.
Strikes. Timed freewriting sessions, including the full text you write, the prompt used, duration and word count.
Session records. Which breathwork, meditation or visualisation sessions you completed, and for how long.
Audio usage. Minutes of generated audio used per day, to enforce fair-use limits.
Profile and identity data
Optional fields you set in your profile: your name, vision, motivation, core values, custom habit, morning routine, and the "who you are" and "who you are becoming" identity fields.
These are used to make AI responses more relevant to you. You can edit or clear them at any time.
FORGE Space
FORGE Space is a single free-text field you control. Whatever you write there is stored against your account and is included as context in AI requests, so that responses reflect what you have told the app about your situation. You can clear it at any time.
Apple Health
FORGE requests read-only access to your daily step count. No other Health data is read, and nothing is ever written back to Apple Health.
Your step count is displayed in the app and is stored against your account as part of your daily record, so that your history is complete across devices. It is not sent to any AI provider.
You can decline Health access, or revoke it later in iOS Settings, and the rest of the app works normally.
Camera and photo library
FORGE can scan a handwritten page from the FORGE Journal so that its contents become a check-in entry.
If you use this feature, the app requests access to your camera or photo library. The photograph is resized on your device, then sent through the FORGE backend to Anthropic, which reads the handwriting and returns the text.
The image is not stored on any server and is not saved to your account. It is held in memory for the duration of the request only. A resized copy remains in the app's temporary cache on your device and is removed by iOS when the cache is cleared or the app is deleted. Your original photograph is untouched.
If you never use the scan feature, no camera or photo access is requested.
Notifications
FORGE schedules daily reminders locally on your device. Your chosen reminder time is stored against your account so it survives a reinstall. No push notification service is used, and no notification content leaves your device.
What FORGE does not collect
FORGE does not collect location data, contacts, browsing history, advertising identifiers, or microphone audio. FORGE contains no analytics, no crash reporting, no telemetry and no tracking of any kind.
Wellbeing flagging
You should know about one automated process.
When you submit free text to FORGE, the backend scans it for language indicating that you may be in serious distress or at risk of harm. This runs automatically on your written reflections and FORGE Space content.
If that scan is triggered:
- FORGE adjusts its response to be appropriate to the situation, rather than replying as a coach would to an ordinary entry.
- A record is stored containing a severity rating, the first 1,000 characters of the text that triggered it, and the date.
- In the most serious cases, the free-text context you have written is withheld from the AI request rather than passed along.
This exists as a safety measure, so that the app does not respond inappropriately to someone in crisis. The record is stored against your account in the same database as your other data, and is deleted when you delete your account.
FORGE is not a medical or crisis service, and this feature is not monitoring in real time. If you are struggling, please contact a doctor or a crisis line in your country.
Who processes your data
FORGE uses the following providers. Each receives only what it needs.
What each provider receives
Supabase. Your email address, and all journal, profile and check-in data described above.
Railway. Requests in transit, including your user id and email. Journal content passes through but is not stored there.
Anthropic. Journal and profile content as set out below. Your name and email are never sent.
async.com. The script text only. No account data, no journal entries.
Apple. Step count is read on your device. Apple receives nothing from FORGE.
Each provider has its own privacy policy:
- Supabase: https://supabase.com/privacy
- Railway: https://railway.com/legal/privacy
- Anthropic: https://www.anthropic.com/legal/privacy
What is sent to the AI
This section is deliberately specific, because different features send different amounts.
Daily reflection. Your check-in for that day (energy, stress, emotions, habits, win, priority, gratitude, reflection), your profile and identity fields, your last seven days of entries for context, and your FORGE Space content.
FORGE Insight. Up to 90 days of your entries, your last two weekly reviews, your full profile and identity fields, your streak and total check-in count, and your FORGE Space content. This is what allows Insight to comment on patterns across months.
Weekly insight. Your last seven days of entries, your core values, your custom habit and your FORGE Space content.
Meditation and visualisation scripts. Only derived summary values: a duration, a session type, a general energy descriptor, a stress rating, an emotional theme and a day-completion state. Your written entries are not sent.
Strikes. The full text of the freewriting session, up to 20,000 characters, plus the prompt used.
Journal page scanning. The photograph of the page, plus your FORGE Space content.
In every case, requests are made by the FORGE backend using its own credentials. Your name and email address are never passed to Anthropic or async.com.
Anthropic processes this content to generate your response and does not use it to train its models. Anthropic's handling is governed by its commercial API terms.
Storage and security
Your data is stored on Supabase infrastructure. Connections between the app, the FORGE backend and all providers use TLS encryption.
Access to your records is restricted to your own authenticated account. The FORGE backend holds elevated credentials in order to write AI responses back to your record and to run account deletion. Those credentials are held server-side only and are never present in the app.
No system is perfectly secure, and absolute security cannot be guaranteed.
Retention and deletion
Your data is kept for as long as your account exists.
Deleting your account. In the app: Profile tab, then the Account section, then Delete Account. You will be asked to confirm. This permanently deletes your account and the data held against it, including journal entries, reflections, profile and identity fields, FORGE Space, weekly and monthly records, session history, wellbeing flags and usage records. It cannot be undone.
Audio generated for meditation or visualisation is written to your device's temporary cache and is not retained on any server.
If deletion fails for any reason, or you would rather it was done manually, email admin@builtnotborn.uk and it will be completed within 30 days.
Your rights
You can, at any time:
- View everything you have written, in the app
- Edit or clear your profile, identity fields and FORGE Space
- Delete individual entries
- Delete your account and all associated data
- Revoke Health, camera or photo access in iOS Settings
If you are in the UK or the European Economic Area, you have rights under UK GDPR and GDPR, including access, rectification, portability, restriction and erasure. To exercise any of these, or to request a copy of your data in a portable format, email admin@builtnotborn.uk.
Data selling and advertising
Your data is never sold, rented, traded or shared for commercial or advertising purposes. FORGE contains no advertising and no third-party trackers.
Children
FORGE is not intended for anyone under 13 and is rated accordingly on the App Store. Personal information is not knowingly collected from children. If you believe a child has provided information through the app, email admin@builtnotborn.uk and it will be deleted promptly.
Changes to this policy
This policy may be updated. When it is, the date at the top of this page changes. Significant changes affecting how your data is used will be signposted in the app where practicable.
